MAPLE SYRUP FIELD TRIP
Let's learn the "sweet science" behind how trees make sap, and how we turn that sap into real maple syrup. We will take a field trip to the Lake County Forest Preserves to learn about this process. Students will learn what is involved in preparing for the season and how to identify which trees that can be tapped. How is the sap made into maple syrup and then make its way into the grocery stores? What processes does the sap need to go through?
Families are welcome to visit Ryerson Woods in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and do the self guided tour to identify the trees that make sap. Here is a link of a recommended vendor for maple syrup (optional): https://maplevalleysyrup.coop/our-story/
